Product Care Guide

Keep Your Natural Fiber Products Beautiful for Years

At Kurma Designs, every piece is handcrafted with care using natural, eco-friendly materials. With a little love and proper maintenance, your products will stay durable, fresh, and elegant for a long time.

Below is a complete care guide for all the fibers.

Water Hyacinth

Water hyacinth (Eichhornia crassipes) is a fast‑growing, free‑floating aquatic plant known for its glossy, rounded leaves and striking lavender‑purple flowers. Native to the Amazon basin, it spreads rapidly across water bodies, forming dense mats that can block sunlight, reduce oxygen levels, and disrupt aquatic ecosystems. Despite being invasive in many regions, it is also used for composting, water purification, and handicrafts due to its high biomass and absorbent fibers.

Water hyacinth products could last for many years if they get the care they require. Please follow care instruction when you bring them home.

  •  When cleaning, do not put water hyacinth products in the washing machine or dishwasher. Just wipe with a damp cloth.
  • Water hyacinth products love light and air; do not keep these products locked up in a damp closet.
  • Do not keep them immersed in water for too long.

Rattan

Rattan is a group of long, flexible climbing palms found mainly in tropical forests of Southeast Asia and Africa. Known for its strong yet lightweight stems, rattan is widely used in making furniture, baskets, and handicrafts. Its natural durability, bendability, and smooth texture make it a popular material for sustainable, eco‑friendly products.

Cane (rattan) products are durable and eco-friendly, but proper care ensures they stay beautiful and last for years.

  • Clean them with damp cloth
  • Cane is a natural material and can absorb water. Do not leave it in damp or wet areas for long periods.
  • If the product gets wet, dry it in a shaded, airy spot—never under direct sunlight.
  • Keep away from heaters or fireplaces to prevent drying and cracking.

Kauna Grass (Water Reed Grass)

Kauna grass (Schoenoplectus articulatus) is a soft, water‑loving reed commonly found in wetlands, marshes, and shallow lakes, especially in Northeast India. Known for its smooth texture and flexibility, the grass is harvested, dried, and woven into eco‑friendly products like mats, baskets, storage boxes, and handicrafts. Its lightweight, durable nature makes it a popular sustainable material in traditional weaving communities

Kauna grass has a property of holding its space sturdy after weaving, its strong, durable and naturally moist resistance. A proper care ensures they stay beautiful and last for years.

  • Clean them with damp cloth
  • Do not leave it in damp or wet areas for long periods.
  • If the product gets wet, dry it in a shaded, airy spot—never under direct sunlight.

Madur Grass

Madur grass (Cyperus pangorei) is a thin, flexible reed traditionally cultivated in the wetlands of West Bengal, India. Known for its smooth texture and natural durability, it is dried and woven to make Madur mats, a heritage craft known for being lightweight, cool, and eco‑friendly. The grass’s strength and fine fibers make it ideal for mats, baskets, table runners, and other handwoven products

Madur Grass could last for many years if they get the care they require. Please follow care instruction when you bring them home.

  •  Use soft brush or a soft wet cloth to gently clean and et it dry completely
